Today we continued with question and answer responses.
Homework Read 20 minutes Today we continued with our summative academic vocabulary assessment. Tomorrow we will go over QAR (Question and Response) type questions for better reading comprehension. We will also review the answers to the test. The re-take test will be on Friday. Remember to have your child read for 20 minutes each night this week.
Reminders * Book fair tomorrow Today we began our academic vocabulary summative assessment. We will continue it on Monday if it is not completed today. It emphasized students being able to apply their vocabulary in a reading context rather than just memorizing vocabulary words. It is critical thinking. Students are being taught that all answers to a text are not always right there in the book in front of them. Sometimes, they must make inferences about their answers, taking what they read, what they already know, and drawing a conclusion. They will improve their reading comprehension greatly by reading more independently at home for homework. Have your child reading all the time and all types of genres: literary, informational, poetry, etc.
Reminders: * Our MyOn contest will begin shortly. More details will follow. * We will be starting a new unit: Anne Frank The Diary of a Young Girl. * Please make sure your child has a composition book, colored pencils, a glue stick, a binder clip, tabs, and scissors. These items are used for their journals which will be a great resource for the Milestones Assessment at the end of the year. They do not need any other binders or notebooks. Keep it simple. It helps them stay organized as well when everything is in one place. *Buy your yearbook now for $30. The price will be going up shortly. *Conference week is this week. Please sign up online if you haven't already. Parents,
It is hard to believe that we are near the end of the first nine weeks already! My grades are just about final. Today we took a re-take of the summative Eleven, so your child has had an opportunity to improve their grade. Make sure that they are utilizing the website Quizlet to practice academic vocabulary. All of our words from this nine weeks have been posted. Make sure your child's narratives are complete by Wednesday. This grade will be included in the second nine weeks grading period. Tomorrow we will be visiting commas again. Thursday we will be in the computer lab to complete narrative writing, and Friday we will take our summative academic vocabulary test. We will be focusing on reading comprehension strategies, especially on inferencing in reading over the next week. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me directly at the school email address: [email protected]. Remember tutoring is on Monday at 7:45-8:15. At this point, I have checked with all students to make sure that they are able to log in to USA Test Prep and Google Classroom. We will be using these two sites frequently. Reminders: *Buy your yearbook for $30 before the price goes up. Today we went to the computer lab to continue working on our Google Classroom essays. The students are having fun learning how to navigate the site. We are currently finishing our first essay online and next week we will learn how to critique each other's papers.
Reminders: *Parent conference letters have been sent home. You may sign up online. The directions are on the letter. * Monday is tutoring and make-up day. * All grades will be final as of Wednesday. Today we learned new vocabulary and revisited previously used words. We examined the Georgia Milestones Narrative Writing rubric to evaluate how their narratives will be scored. We will continue this lesson of evaluating a narrative text for effective elements tomorrow. They need to revise and edit these papers this week for homework. They are to view a couple of review videos on USA Test Prep as well.
Today we started our county writing prompt that will count as a summative grade. We will finish them tomorrow in the computer lab. No test tomorrow!
Today in class we went over reading comprehension strategies and character analysis. The students completed the work they started on Monday with the substitute. The worksheet they did was classwork. The homework that they need to be doing in on USA Test prep. Grade recovery will be left open over the break for any student who wishes to improve their grade. There are five assignments under the grade recovery tab. The student can work on each assignment unlimited times to improve their score, but must score an 80% to be considered "passed." When we return from the break, students will continue to do their homework on USA test prep, but I will group the Language Arts assignments for them for easier organization.
Tomorrow we will be continuing with the story, "Eleven" and writing to our county extended writing prompt. Friday, your child will have the option of typing up their final draft in the computer lab to satisfy the production and distribution of writing standard in sixth grade. Today we ensured that we could put pronouns in their proper case: subjective, objective, or possessive. This is a lesson that we started last week when we previewed pronoun case online for homework on USA Test Prep.
* Please make sure that your child is completing the assignments online daily. Many children are still not completing these and it will affect their grade. The students have had almost two weeks to complete the grade recovery and the deadline is Friday (extended from Wednesday). * Please speak with your child about socializing during instructional time. I have been proactive on this to ensure a positive learning environment. If your child receives a second warning, you will be notified. Thank you for you cooperation in this matter. Today we went to the computer lab to begin typing up our personal narratives. We will finish narratives this week as we begin to look at pronoun case and compound sentences.
*Homework this week consists of completing the Grade recovery on USA Test Prep (due Septemeber 16) and and few quick lessons introducing new information about pronouns and sentences. Tuesday- The video and game that is labeled All Things ELA Pronoun Case. Wednesday- Figurative Language Thursday and Friday- Sentence clauses *Please sign and return your child's progress report.
Classwork: Today we built on our lesson from yesterday about leads and writing personal narratives. We used mentor texts to identify what an effective narrative should consist of. We will continue writing our personal narratives the rest of this week as we prepare for our weekly formative assessment on Friday.
We will be using USA Test Prep. Your child will bring home a username and password with their progress report on Friday. This site will allow your child to make up missed work when they are absent. This site will be replacing our All Things ELA that we do weekly. If there is a problem and your child does not have internet access, please notify me and I will give them an alternative assignment.

Today we took our first summative assessment. Grades will be posted this weekend. Please make sure that you are signed up for parent portal and Remind. Our grading system, Infinite Campus, will alert you of recent grades posted. If I have left any spaces blank in the grade book by your child's name they have not turned in the assignment. It is your child's responsibility to get any missing work turned in as soon as possible. Our journals are set up and we're ready to start journaling daily. Students will be expected to write our essential question every day as well as taking notes in an organized manner. Please ask your child to see his/her journal weekly. They will not be graded, but they will be a great resource for Georgia Milestones Review. We appreciate any donations of tissue and hand sanitizer before we enter flu season. If you ever have any questions, please feel free to email me or send me a message on Remind or Dojo. I usually respond within 24 hours, except on weekends. I'd love to hear from you!
Update: Today we went to the media center for the first time this year. The students enjoyed checking out and reading their books. We followed our visit up with a quick review game of Password for our academic vocabulary. All students now have the opportunity to earn Dojo points in class. We will be setting up our writing journals this week and continuing to study summarizing, paraphrasing, quoting, and citing text. We will be earning our first grade soon, so make sure that you are set up for parent portal to monitor student grades. Homework should be completed nightly on the All Things ELA page and each student is asked to read 20 minutes/night or 90-100 minutes/week. My students are very enthusiastic and want to be successful in their schoolwork. I couldn't be more proud to be a part of their education! Please make sure your child gets any missed assignments if they are absent.
